Being summertime and all sometimes Zoe has to come into the studio and hang for the day. Today she helped me set up to do a few quick shots on white and we nabbed a few shots of each other. I have to say it's pretty damn cool to see her holding a camera. Makes me smile almost every time. Ya know, except when I am asked to make my monkey face!

David Gessner: Globe Magazine

Whenever you get a subject, like David Gessner, who says "You want me to go stand in the middle of the river?" You know it's going to be an awesome shoot. It wasn't just any river but the Charles river. Which is not know for being the cleanest water around. David's a great guy and I had a blast photographing him. Go buy his book "My Green Manifesto". This has to be my favorite environmental portrait that I have taken to date. It was great for a few reasons: 1)I daring subject. 2)I didn't bring lights, it was just me and my camera bag. 3)It was used in the mag exactly how I envisioned it.

SUPER POST....and July 2011 Flew By

Sorry for the lack of posts. I know it has been a while. July flew by with a ton of fun projects and a week away with my family in Vermont. So here's a super post of what went on:

The above shot of Holly Courville running through the sunflower field ran as a double page spread in Runner's World. I'm very proud of this shot. It was shot on one of those super ridiculously hot and humid days. I was sweating and poor Holly had to keep running back and forth while I dialed in my lighting and composition. Which I found to be a challenge since the sun was coming from behind but I wanted the front of the sunflowers in the shot. I had to light the runner with a portable strobe and then hold my camera upside down to cheat the shutter sync and shoot at 1/500th of a second to really freeze the action without blur. It took a while and a lot of sweat but we nailed it and I'm proud that it ran in the mag. I also just sent out a promo postcard with this image on it. (If you are a creative and didn't get one and want to be on the list please email me and I'll get one right out!)

I also had this feature in the Boston Globe Magazine on a blueberry farm up in New Hampshire. It was a last minute assignment that needed to be shot over the weekend of the 4th of July. I'm always psyched to shoot so that wasn't a big deal. Plus my parents used to own a blueberry farm in upstate NY so I knew a little about the operation and could talk the talk. Well I guess NH and Google haven't quite nailed down the map thing yet because the road it told me to take didn't exist and combined with no cell reception it took some exploring to arrive more than two hours late. Thankfully Duncan Geddes, pictured in the portrait outtakes above, was super nice and understanding. So we got to explore his property and create some beautiful images for the story. As I knew and Duncan reminded me it was too early for the berry's to be in full go mode and if we shot it a month later the fields would be completely blue, but the editors need the shots done early to fill the space in the mag so we worked our magic and pulled it off.

Then came the call, "Hey Josh, can you please go shoot this island in the harbor for us tomorrow? We need the images as soon as possible. The story closes this week." "Of coarse I can" I replied and began figuring out how to make my way out to Lovells Island. It was me, my camera bag, a sandwich, bottle of water and a swimsuit on a ferry out the next morning. It was super cool and I kept thinking of the show "Lost" as I was exploring these old war forts and looking for the "hatch" which I did find. (see the last outtake above) I can't wait to get back out there and camp for a night or two. One part of the island I had a whole beach to myself with no one around. I threw on my trunks and went for a swim all by myself. It was awesome.

Plus my wife, daughter and I went camping in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont in July too. We really enjoyed being in the mountains. We swam, read, toasted marshmallows, made smores and I even got a day in at the awesome mountain bike trail network called Kingdom Trails. It couldn't have been a better vacation!

I had some other really fun assignments that I can't show yet but July definitely flew by.

In addition to this blog and my portfolio site I have created a tumblr blog called "PHOneTOS" as an outlet for the photos I take with my iPhone. Of coarse I prefer to create with hi end cameras and in controlled situations but I am constantly looking and seeing as I walk through life and I capture a ton of cool things with my phone simply because I can. It's always with me and being a photodork I always want to be shooting. The camera-phone is a perfect tool for that. Until now the shots have been simply stored in my phone and are rarely seen by anybody but me (once in a while my wife and daughter get the phone shoved in there face with a "hey check this out) but I want to share with as many people that are interested.

Fun on the Job. Why the Hell Not?

While photographing Jessica Gellman I handed her the camera and slapped on a Pat's helmet and showed her my tough face. Next stop the NFL. Awesome!

That's what Josh Campbell Photography is all about: getting amazing images and having a good time. We'll leave the seriousness to the brain surgeons and rocket scientists.

Here's an out-take of Jessica Gellman at Gillette Stadium braving the cold. I tried to get her to where the helmet for a funny shot. Good thing she wasn't into it because that thing was super tight and painful to take on and off. I got a nice note from her after the story ran thanking me for creating a great photo of her. I love it!

Yeah we had to ask him to take down his jock strap for this one and Horton and Wheeler's too.

I threw a cheep shot and Rechi just laughed and layed me out! Thanks to my assistant Kyle Holmquist for snapping these.

Yeah I was geeking out before Recchi showed up and got these shot of the bear in the players lounge.
That bear has been up since the Bobby Orr days, who we also recently photographed for Rectrix Private Jet Company.

When I was shooting Francona at Fenway park earlier last year the rule was "Don't touch the grass!"
Here at the Bruins locker room in the TD Garden the rule is "Don't step on the B!"
It's harder than you think when you are bouncing from one shot to the other with light stands and crap in the way.
But we made it out without setting a foot on the trusty "B".

James Haley 1947-2010

Today we laid to rest a great man. Our friend James Haley passed on December 23. James was an amazing human being that was in prison for thirty years for a crime he didn't commit. His strong will and commitment to clearing his name rang true when he was released three years ago. This amazing man came out free from resentment and bitterness. He worked for Greater Boston Legal Services and volunteered his gracious spirit to helping others that were wrongly convicted. While in a program at Landmark Education, where we met and our friendship began, James created a book drive that collected and delivered over 3000 books to prisons throughout the country. James has truly touched, moved and inspired everyone he came in contact with. I am fortunate to have known such an amazing individual. Thank you James! While your body is gone your spirit will live on forever in me, my wife, and everyone else that you have affected throughout your life.

I was up for a sunrise portrait at the beach this morning. The alarm went off at 4:30am. I gathered my gear and waited for my buddy Matt to roll up. And we were off to the beach to catch the sunrise. This wasn't a job but a personal project. I am working on creating 100 new portraits over the next few months. And having good friends like Matt that get up super early on a Saturday to go wear a wetsuit at the beach when it's 29º F certainly helps out!
And then I figured why stop there. Let's get some shit done. So after an really good nap I met up with another friend, Phil, to capture his portrait too. I nailed two great portraits at two different locations today that I am totally stoked on.
Matt and Phil are #9 and #10 out of 100 of my portrait project and I can't wait to see how the next 90 go!

The Hipstamatic ap, for the iPhone, is definately cool and has a way of what would normally be a so so image into something cooler. At first I was totally in love with it and shot with it all the time, and I still do really. But lately I have been thinking about how much easier it is for anybody to make a "cool looking" photo. I see them pop up on facebook all the time, and pretty much whoever is using the Hipstamatic ap has cool shots and pleasing results. I guess it's part of the digital revolution? Then again part of being a photographer is knowing which tool is right for the photo you desire. For the the hipstamatic is the perfect point and shoot. It's a fixed focal length lens so everything is consistant and makes all the random moments look as cool as the way I see them and that's all I really want out of a point and shoot.

Got out to play today: Stoked on the 603 Trails

Took a ride today with my buddy Kyle and we shot some really sick dirt jumps. The location is called The 603 Trails. Those guys have been building jumps for years and have their construction skills dialed. I have been to many cool places in my life and the 603 trails is one of the finest examples of dedication and skill I have ever been to. I am honored to have been able to shoot there and I'm stoked for next time.

This is my Uncle Pat. Even though I'm from NY I have been a Red Sox fan since I was old enough to know what baseball was. Everyone in my family has been pro Sox and damn the Yankees since I can remember. Thanks for that Uncle Pat for being part of that. It's helped a lot since moving to Boston. This was the first portrait I had printed in a magazine. It's of snowboarder Dar Short. We shot this along with a bunch of other film stuff. I used a canon flash on the Holga for this with Fuji 800 print film. That day we also did some b+w infared 35mm stuff and some color and b+w 645 portraits as well.

This week I am feauturing long time friend and photographic artist Jenny Wilson. I have known Jenny since high school. We went to the same college in Vermont and then were roommates at photo school. She is currently living in Brooklyn with her husband James and dogs Grace and Keeper.
Jenny's unique approach to seeing things as art really comes through in her work. While seeing the scans here on the interweb is cool you really need to see her prints to fully experience just how well done they are, especially the black and white images.

Monday: Portraits of my Family + Friends

I'm changing things up a bit this week here on the blog. I am introducing Portraits of My Family+Friends Monday's instead of the marketing update. While I am a businessman I am a photographer first and want to keep things fresh and have my photos seen.
This is a portrait of my Grandmother. She is 80 years young and living a great life. She works out every day and is going on a cruise in May. This portrait is special to me because not only is it the first portrait I have taken of her but the day I photographed her was the first time I had seen her in many years.

Today I was out for a run and saw this one lonesome slide on the ground. Picked it up and slid it in my jacket pocket and went on with the run. The slide is very cool 70's looking family scene, real lifestyle. I find it amazing that even in the midst of learning to run I still see things. I'm still looking around at my environment and noticing things that most take for granted or don't even realize is there. Today I stumbled onto a golden moment in time and I'm very grateful for it!

Tomorrow is the half pipe finals for the US Open of Snowboarding up at Stratton, VT. It's traditionally the last major contest of the season and one of the only times of the year the super pros snowboard on the east coast. Huge crowds, good parties, and lots of really good snowboarding. I have photographed the event many times and these images are some of my most memorable. I have pleanty of shots in the archives of super big half pipe tricks but these were just so much fun. They are of Vermont native and Editor of Snowboarder Magazine, Pat Briges. Pat had this idea back in 2003 to enter the event and write about what it was like from a "competitors" perspective. In classic Bridges style he shotgunned a Red Bull and lit up a cig in the starting gate. I didn't catch his run but I can be certain there was at least one very well executed hand plant in there. He's the king of the handplant. I think I remeber him doing handplants at Killington one time with a beer in his hand and not spilling a drop. Only Pat Briges man, only Pat!
Pat, if you happen to read this, thanks for the awesome memories. Keep killing it!

This week I am feauturng Richard Avedon as a photographer that inspires me. As an assistant I would regularly go with Joel Benjamin to photograph the collection of the JFK Library and Museum. At their storage facility is a huge Avedon print of Jackie Kennedy that measures something like 8 feet by 10 feet. So damn cool.
I am very inspired by his American West series. This crisp large format black and whites shot on white of regular plain old hard working Americans. So well done. Makes me want to bust out the 4x5 and hit the road.
So thank you Mr. Avedon for creating such inspiring work!

Friday: Shots I did with film

I thought of this shot earlier this week. I created this in late 2001 or early 2002 with film in a plastic Holga camera. I used a softbox and a white seamless set up in our kitchen. My friend and roomate at the time had this rad cowboy hat that he go in Texas while on a shoot and doing some mechanical bull riding. We shot this just for the hell of it, just to shoot. Enjoy!

This week I am featuring friend and fellow photographer Christian Kozowyk as a photographer/artist that inspires me. We met a while back assisting Tibor Nemeth and have been good friends since. We roll through the woods together on our mountain bikes and share a love for the Boston Celtics. I have watched Christian make the transition from assistant to full time photographer and he's done it quite successfully. Just check out his recent work for the Army to see the cool work he's getting.
Thanks for inspiring me Christian. Keep killing it! And the trails will be dry soon so we can get out and tear it up some more!

Monday: Marketing Update

I have been shooting a bunch of personal work lately. Some running stuff and some ice climbing images too. In the past I have been sitting on images for a while before showing. Last week I updated my site with the most recent work. Then sent out several email blasts promoting the work and the site. I have seen a dramatic increase in website hits and have had a lot of really great feedback. I really like seeing that what I'm shooting is hitting home with my target markets. It inspires me to keep on shooting what I like and then put it out in the world!

This is a shot from my daughter Zoe's first day of kindergarden almost 6 years ago. I documented the morning with one roll of Kodak 3200. This is the shot she picked out to go in her 5th grade scrapbook. The one she chose of her now is part of the Kids Faces series on my website, check it out here. Enjoy!

This week I am featuring Cole Barash as the photographer/artist that inspires me. Cole got into the game super young. He connected with Burton photographer Jeff Curtes when he was in junior high and asked a ton of questions. And shot a ton of film. Now Cole's in his early twenties traveling the globe shooting top pro snowboarders and ad campaigns for Nike. To put it simply, he's killing it. He is pushing snowboard photographing in a positive art driven way with his silo series and his skills of production really shine in the fireworks night pipe shoot for Transworld.

Cole, I am really proud of how far you've come and look forward to seeing where you take your photography. You have influenced me since you were a young grom back in VT and continue to do so with every image of yours I see. Thank you!

Here's a shot I did with Bryan Iguchi at the World Quarterpipe Championships at Waterville Valley, NH in 2002. That event (more party then contest) was a blast. They had lit a fire on the run in and the riders had to jump the fire while getting pummeled with snowballs and beer cans on there way to throw down on the quarter. In fact I had a shot of someone ollying the fire in Rolling Stone next to some of Tim Zimmerman's photos. This shot here ran in the first issue of The Snowboard Journal printed really well on super nice paper. I was stoked to be part of it. It also ran in Seth Butler and Mike Nevin's The Journal back when it was a b+w snowboard mag, not the full color art mag that it is now. It might have been in Eastern Edge too, I can't remember.
I shot this with a Hassleblad, 80mm lens and cross processed a tungsten film in c-41. It was lit by the sun through fog.
